Do I need batteries to use this stud finder?
No! The Magic Stud Finder Plus™ works entirely with strong rare-earth magnets—no batteries, charging, or cords needed.
How does it detect studs?
With the provided Xtreme Magnet(s) inserted in the holder, you swipe the holder across the wall. The strong magnets jump from the holder to the wall as you pass over hardware holding your drywall to the stud. You get a satisfying and tactile “click” making it impossible to miss.
Can it be used on all wall types?
Magic Stud Finder Plus works on drywall – mounted to both wood and metal studs. *May not work on lathe and plaster walls*
How do I know when I’ve found a stud?
You’ll hear a loud click as the magnet JUMPS towards the wall. Pull the holder back and the magnet is stuck to the stud!
Is it safe to use near electrical wiring?

This stud finder is great, especially for someone who isn’t very handy. I loved that it doesn’t require batteries and is pretty self-explanatory to use. It’s small and compact, so it’s easy to carry around. I would definitely recommend it as a gift or just to keep around the house for small home projects like hanging pictures.
I don’t do enough DIY projects to justify one of those stud finders where you can virtually see through walls, so I’ve made do with two different budget electronic versions with terrible results. Then I heard about the magnetic type which lets you find the nail heads in the studs, but the first one I bought was also terrible, with magnets so weak you could just barely feel it in your hands, and once you found it you had to use your non-dominant hand to mark it off.
This design, however, has knocked my socks off with how easy it is to use and how accurate it is. Just insert two of the strong magnetic discs into the back of the yellow box (which has soft felt pads to keep from scraping the wall), and run it along the wall until you hear a loud snap as it clings to the nail head. Use the third disc to stick on the wall and mark where it is and continue searching until you’ve found another one, and you can mark off your stud location. Easy!
It’s nice not to have to worry about battery life, and it’s quite affordable even if you are only using it for a few projects. I’m impressed by how well it functions considering I thought magnets weren’t the answer — it’s just a case of building a better mousetrap, and this tool has done it!
Good magnetic strength. Easy to use and accurate. Works great and it’s a good quality built finder. I’m happy with it.
I’ve used a pretty standard electronic stud detector for years and it’s been fine, but sometimes it detects something else and results in extra holes and misfires. I’ve seen a few magnet-based solutions and thought it would be cool to try. Overall, I really like this one so far. It only includes three little magnet pucks, but that’s enough for most basic jobs. I played around with it throughout my house and it was easy and actually kind of fun to use – the little click when it hits a magnet is oddly satisfying. Since it’s magnetic, there’s no need for batteries, charging, etc, which is very refreshing. I also appreciate that the device has bubble levelers so it can double as a mini level as well.
My only complaint is with the storage. It has three slots in the back to store the pucks in, but there’s nothing to really lock them in so I still end up keeping it in the original box. It includes a little thin metal ruler and my initial assumption was that this would slide in along the bottom as a lid during storage, but no. if they had some system to keep the pieces locked in during storage, allowing me to to just throw this in with my tools without needing the original box, that would have been a notable improvement and I feel like not much of a change would be needed.
Overall, great little device. Not sure if there are other options that allow you to store the pucks within the device better, but that’s something I would be include to look for after using this one. Not a complete deal breaker, but having so many devices around the house I have come to appreciate built-in storage solutions a lot more.
